Start with what you're protecting

Your trip isn't just a date on the calendar — it's deposits, flights, resort stays, excursions, and everything I've helped you piece together. Most of that is prepaid, and most of it has its own cancellation rules depending on who you booked with.

Before deciding whether travel protection makes sense for your trip, it helps to think through the actual financial and logistical pieces at stake — and what you'd want answered if any of it changed unexpectedly.

If you couldn't take the trip

How much of what you've already paid would be refundable under your cruise line, resort, or tour operator's own cancellation policy?

If your trip were interrupted

What extra costs could you face — transportation, hotel, rebooking — if your plans had to change after the trip already started?

If you needed care away from home

Does your health coverage actually travel with you, especially internationally, or would you be on your own?

If your belongings didn't arrive

What's already covered through an airline or credit card, and what gap would a dedicated policy actually close?

What's Typically Covered

The pieces of a standard policy

Comprehensive plans usually bundle trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and evacuation coverage, baggage and personal effects protection, and travel delay coverage. One optional upgrade worth knowing about on its own:

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)

Can let a traveler cancel for virtually any reason — not just a covered one — and can help recover a portion of non-refundable costs (commonly in the 50–75% range, depending on the plan). It almost always has to be purchased within a short window after the first trip deposit — commonly 10–21 days — and typically requires canceling at least 48 hours before departure. Exact terms vary by plan, so the specific policy details always govern.

The Numbers

What it typically costs

4–7% of total trip cost, typically
10–21 days window to add CFAR or a pre-existing condition waiver
48 hrs minimum notice to cancel under most CFAR policies

Smaller trips tend to see a higher percentage, larger trips a lower one — the exact cost depends on trip cost, length, destination, traveler age, and the coverage tier selected.

How This Works With Me

Information, not advice — the choice is always yours

I'm certified through the Travel Insured International Travel Advisor Certification Program, which means I can share how travel protection generally works and include a quote request as part of your booking. I'm not a licensed insurance producer or agent, though, so I can't advise you on which specific plan is right for you or compare coverage on your behalf — and honestly, that's part of why I partner with Travel Insured specifically. Their own licensed insurance agents are genuinely great to work with, and I'd rather you get real coverage guidance from them directly than a guess from me. You can review the plan details and choose your own coverage directly — I'm simply here to make sure you know the option exists and get the quote request started if you'd like one.

Common Questions

Travel Insurance FAQ

Is travel insurance worth it for a domestic trip?

Often yes — trip cancellation and interruption coverage can help protect the money you've already put down regardless of destination, even if the medical piece matters less close to home.

Doesn't my credit card already cover this?

Some cards can include limited protection, but coverage amounts and qualifying reasons are usually much narrower than a dedicated policy. Worth checking your card's actual benefits guide before assuming it's enough.

When should I actually buy my policy?

As close to your first deposit as possible — ideally within 10–21 days, since that's typically the window for CFAR eligibility and pre-existing condition waivers.

Can you tell me which plan I should pick?

I can't — I'm not a licensed insurance producer or agent, so plan selection and coverage comparisons aren't something I'm able to advise on. I can point you to the plan details and include a quote request when we book, but the choice is yours to make, ideally after reading the policy details directly.
